Composer’s Essai

As I took ENC 1101 my views on composition and English composition have completely changed. I now write with more meaning and understanding of rhetorical situation and exigency and my writing seems much more deliberate for the audience I am writing for, most of the time. As I came in I viewed English writing as more for essays but as I learned about all of the different rhetorical situations I realize that writing and what I learn in school should be applied to everything from a professional email to a diary. For me, as I explored literary composition and the thought process behind composing, just through this six weeks I was able to find that literacy is an art, and literature is another art form that is just the same as music or paintings. When I first started this class, mind you, I only understood composition as writing an essay with a pre-made topic and very little emotional support or ideas. As I began with this class, the first topic was that… “there is none” (Jessica Thomsen) and it was simply just an emotional essay, an essay that told a story. What ended up happening was going twice over the minimum word count, while I’m sure that might seem normal to someone getting their master’s degree or PHD, however, coming straight out of high school that amount of emotion in an essay was something I had yet to see myself do. Setting limitations sometimes increases the ability to write, so as I went further researching in this class and learning, I set limits for myself and that level of freedom gave me the ability to write with passion. I have learned this semester how to write better; which I was honestly expecting to learn. However, what I actually learned was the ability to write with purpose, to write with a reason, an exigency. The biggest take away I have gotten from this class, surprisingly had nothing to do with writing. It instead has more to do with musical composition. What I have noticed this year while writing music, was that I found exigency in my own music writing, a purpose. I displayed emotion in my writing and had to limit myself with my own work, pushing harder and giving challenges. I have learned not only English Composition from this class but instead applying skills in texting, emailing, sciences, and music. This class has changed myself as a composer for every subject.
